Project Summary

First problem statement : 
Children aged between 5 to 10 years old, living in Dharavi slum are currently not able to go to the primary school. Even if the school is free, they are not always aware of that and of the importance of education. Therefore, in this kind of areas, there is a higher rate of illiteracy (reading, writing and accountacy) 
 
2nd problem statement : 
Children aged between 6 to 12 years old, living in Dharavi slum are currently not able to speak english. Even if the school is free, English is not a priority because of the lack of qualified teachers and infrastructures. Therefore, they are facing difficulties to apply for university and they don’t have access to higher knowledge and everyday words written in English. 
 

Solution

A Memory game to make it easier and more fun to learn english

Prototype

Prototype #1 
    1. Hypothesis: memory cards with paper and on our own drawings to teach English in a fun way. 
    2. Experiment: we between us to this game, we did not have the chance to try it with children, it was just a way to see if it was working and if people who were adults could understand it.
    3. Results/learning: it worked, people were able to understand it. We got a chance to explain the rules to other people and test it. 
 
Prototype #2 
    1. Hypothesis : memory cards are still made out of paper BUT we made a better prototype with logos from the Internet so that it is more picturable. 
    2. Experiment: we tested it in a classroom with children (secondary school). 
    3. Results/learning: children loved the game. Yet, we need to find a structure to make the sentence at the end of the game. We also need to find another material to make the cards stronger. We also made a survey to enhance our next prototype 
Prototype #3
    1. Hypothesis: cards need to be thicker and more resistant (so not made out of paper); logos need to be more relevant, logos need to be in black and white because of the laser cutting machine, we also wanted to add some technologies, just to learn how to do some. Maybe we make the sentence; Afterwards, a speaker can pronounce the sentence. This is our ppt doc for our prototype
    2. Experiment: it took us a lot of time to find the right logos, some words were more difficult than others
