#SDG In Focus

SDG 1: No Poverty

Idea

Baffled by the income divide, we wanted to solve the problem of financial resource management. If awareness and education didn’t prompt action, we had to look at something bigger. Then the idea of an interactive board game sprung to life.

Problem statement

Educate lower middle class families to make sound financial decisions using non- traditional methods.

Constraints

  • Keep the game fun.
  • Prevent the game from getting repetitive.

Idea Brainstorming

Snakes and ladder is a lot like our uncertain financial futures. What if instead of a snake you had to play an accident and what if instead of a ladder you get to move forward if you had insurance!

But this format of a game gets repetitive. A few game plays and the players could figure the moves and the learning outcomes were minimal.

Induction of uncertainty can make the game interesting, educational and fun for the players. So, we tried to make a game like “Money and Assets”.

Final Solution

How do we get low income families to sign up for financial schemes?

How do we educate lower middle class families to make sound financial decisions using non- traditional methods?

Chits funds are a largely popular way to save money. From our field visits we found out that participating in a chit fund is a social activity, involving immense amount of trust.
Women would come together a fixed number of times each year/quarter to auction and give the prize money pooled to the person most in need of it. It’s a small celebration, with food and laughter. In Dharavi, they play housie, a simple game of gambling.

What if all these events took place and instead of housie, they learnt about financial decision making without even realizing it without giving up on the high that gambling gives us all?

Prototyping: MDF is a light material that could be cut, stuck together and doesn’t catch termites. Adding other physical components to mdf would be easier. The visual aspects like symbols and texts could be added using printed stickers.
The rotating rows have both, increased the degree of uncertainty and elements not in control of the players. The mirroring of these emotions that are so close to real life will inculcate a subconsciously intuitive thought process to make better financial decisions outside of the game.
