Peltier PC Cooling: Smart Laptop Cooling System with Real-Time Monitoring

Problem Statement

Gaming is a pastime much of the world engages in. Although the first thing that comes to mind when I say the word gaming is consoles, often people game on laptops instead. Current laptop cooling solutions are static and inefficient, leading to overheating issues, performance degradation, dust collection and user dissatisfaction. Additionally, traditional cooling methods often lack user-friendly interfaces and fine control capabilities. For our Innovation School residency, we wanted to create a system to fix all these issues in a dynamic, efficient and economical way by making a Peltier PC Cooling system.

Objectives of the project

  • Cool the bottom panel hotspot of laptops
  • Run off of USB C power using phone charger bricks/USB4 port
  • Use temperature sensors to record bottom panel temperature
  • Use a switch to allow user to select cooling presets
  • Use temperature data and preset selector to adjust power
  • Display the temperature and power data on a small display
  • Raise and tilt the laptop to an adjustable and comfortable angle, and incorporate mobile holders or cable management

Measuring Success

Our objectives of efficiency and efficacy will be measured using graphs plotting laptop performance scores with 0W, 20W, 40W…and so on, of thermal assistance from the system. We will also measure success by portability, extra features included, ease of use and safety of the system.

Final Project Idea

The project focuses on creating a smart Peltier PC Cooling system that effectively prevents laptop overheating; while also remaining portable, and easily powered by phone chargers. The solution features a Peltier-based cooling mechanism, real-time temperature monitoring via an OLED display, and notifications through Wi-Fi connectivity. It also includes proactive temperature alerts for user convenience. In addition, a built-in laptop stand enhances cooling efficiency and user ergonomics, creating an all-in-one solution for a safer, user-friendly, and adaptable cooling experience. Moreover, there is also an optional temperature data logging feature, as well as various power usage profiles available for those looking to optimize system performance and efficiency.
